Sclerotherapy (Leg Vein) Treatment

Dermatology Associates of Winchester Sclerotherapy Proceedure

Consultation – Sclerotherapy Consultation

Our laser nurse provides a free consultation for the evaluation of leg veins.  She will determine whether a patient needs sclerotherapy, laser, or a consult with a vascular surgeon.  This can not be determined by the secretary or nurse over the phone since the vein size and type need to be seen.  Sclerotherapy is considered the “gold standard” of treatments when used on the appropriate veins.  Sclerotherapy is a very skilled procedure and improves with experience.  Dr. O’Brien has over 16 years of experience performing the procedure and is well known for his success rate.  At the consultation the nurse will remind the patient to avoid aspirin, Motrin and ibuprofen for one week prior to the procedure to minimize the risk of bruising.  Patients should inform the physician if they are taking any medication.

Procedure – Sclerotherapy Procedure

During your procedure you will feel the physician clean the area with an alcohol swab then you will feel a slight pinprick at each injection site.  Some patients experience a stinging sensation when the solution is injected into the vessel.  The procedure usually takes about 15-30 minutes depending on the number and size of vessels being injected.

Recovery – Sclerotherapy Recovery

Patients will be able to walk out of the office immediately after the procedure.  We do recommend that all vigorous exercise is avoided for one week.  Light walks are permitted and encouraged after sclerotherapy.  Some physicians, but not all, require special support stockings for several days after the procedure.  There can be some temporary redness at the injection sites after the procedure and some patients can develop brown lines or spots during the weeks after the procedure.  This brown discoloration usually fades within 3-6 months.  Patients should avoid hot baths, saunas and direct sun exposure for at least a week after the procedure.  Showers are permitted but the water should not be very hot.  The injection sites can be cleansed with a mild soap in the shower.  The results of the treatment are gradual and may take 6-12 weeks to appear.  Typically, patients need 2-3 sessions to optimize the results that are achievable with sclerotherapy.
